SCENE 30 - A Wizards Tower

SCENE 30 – A Wizards Tower
By Gamekeeper Fbaff on Monday, 20 January 2014 at 13:15

Sefir of Serion is a stereotypical wizard, dressed purple robes, a wide-brimmed hat with a floppy cone, and holds a tall staff. He resides with his student, a wood elf named Amavia TyrnaeValsa (which means Beautiful Luck of the House of Children of Silken Weavers) in a tower in Chalice, which is accessible through a stout wooden door.

On the ground floor is his shop and living room, warm with colourful wall-hangings, soft wooden furniture and cushions. He is friendly and welcomes guests, showing you up some steep and narrow winding stairs to his library and study on the first floor. Sefir’s bookshelf contains around twenty books, all handmade. There is a large tilt-angle desk upon which he is constructing his own books, behind which is a large wine rack containing many scrolls.

The wizard mentions his workshop and private quarters above. There is also a storage loft occupied by wild pigeons which has a splendid view over Chalice. Downstairs is a lean-to building, the small stone walled kitchen added as an afterthought onto the outside of the tower but accessible only through an archway leading to the shop. It has a dumb-waiter reaching all the way up to the top floor, and he immediately sends Amavia to prepare some snacks and drinks for the guests.

Sefir begins explaining who Serion is, in front of a larger than life size wooden statue of a wizardly looking old man with his hand outstretched holding an open book. Sefir places his own staff in the other hand of the statue. The elves immediately recognise crude human workmanship in the carving, and the elven name for this deity is Livurian the Sorcerer.

Gamekeeper Fbaff Sefir smiles at Alphi. “I am a wizard, not an historian. There is more happening in this world than any, even the gods themselves, can know. And much of it best left that way. The past is gone and we cannot change it. But as to what happening now, we do at least have some small advantage.”

He kneels before the statue of his patron deity, and mumbles some words. You hear an audible ‘click’ and a moment later the wizard is standing once again. He strides over to the door and places a bar across it.

“Thankfully the skies have cleared since whatever fell upon us this day, which I anticipate some of you here are able to explain. All in good time. I have work to do if we are to discover the whereabouts of the villain you seek.”

He looks at Jasper. “I am as you know a commercial wizard and will be seeking recompense for my efforts.”

Jasper nods in agreement. The scholar is very excited to be meeting with Sefir. “Of course, my friend. The nobles of Chalice for whom I work have assured me that they will supply funds enough to meet my humble requirements. Hiring of your expertise seems only proper given the circumstances.”

Amavia returns into the room carrying a large urn. Herb scented smoke pours from it. She places it on a low shelf to one side of the comfortable ground floor lounge room and returns to the kitchen. Meanwhile Sefir nods and ascends the steep spiral stairway, shouting; “Make yourselves at home. Amavia, bring some of those delicious cookies for our quests.”

The books do not have writing on their spines, they are lined up on the book shelf (apart from some large ones which are stacked). Without knowing the particular tome, you will have to look inside each one to find out what it is. Some might have illustrations, symbols or words on the front cover.

Jardel Mcfarland I assumed that magic books would be writen in a language that all mages would be taught how to read (After all anyone who knew how to read could read them. And a magicians never reveal there secrets). I was also assuming that if you knew how to speak a language you could read and write it. WHOOPs. It makes sense though. Is there any there that are writen in the elvish script or a older script?

Gamekeeper Fbaff Some of the symbols might be recognizable, it depends on your Magic Skill also. You would have to study the books; talk with Sefir and Amavia IC about it

Jardel Mcfarland I’d say that if they do it should be something like a new language or learning to write or something like that. Not suddenly learning magic.

Gamekeeper Fbaff @Alimar:
The stairs wind narrowly up past three closed wooden doors to the top floor, the attic space. It is entirely constructed of wood, extending beyond the circumference of the stone tower.

Above, eaves beneath wooden roof tiles house many pigeons whose cooing sounds are loud, either soothing or a cacophony depending on how much you like pigeons.

The eaves cannot be seen because hanging from them all across the room are large sheets of animal skins, which catch all the guana and stink of it. There is a hole directly in the center of it, the middle of the room, this is a few feet wide and directly above another animal skin on the floor.

All around the chamber wide windows with shutters, some of which are open and others are closed, by walking around the room you can see all the way out over the town and into the countryside beyond.

This is exactly what Sefir is doing. He is mumbling to himself, in a world of his own, holding his forehead and with his eyes closed as he makes his way around the room. There are a few pigeons sitting on the window ledges and flapping in and out of the room.

As you watch, Sefir abruptly straightens up and points casually out into the distance. “Aha, I have you, the young rogue these fellows are hunting. Let’s have a look at you.” He is apparently under the effect of some spell that enables him to see many leagues distant.

“Certainly, friend.” Jasper is filled up with enthusiasm and decides to pour the tea for everyone. “I am a historian more than a storyteller. I can repeat information from the tomes of legend, but all embellishment to this comes from a strong desire to use this language with the grandiosity for which it has potential. This is Salamonis education, no doubt about it. It is how scholars have mind to speak. It is told that you can always tell when an academic is onto something in his research, because his words fall abrupt; lest he lose his focus. Your tea.” He passes you a cup of herbal tea and begins passing them around to everyone. You notice that he also uses raising of his voice to above necessary levels to further emphasis his point.

Amavia returns into the room carrying a tray of baked pastries.

It becomes obvious that Sefir is working, tracking down the whereabouts of the man who the humans Jasper and the Dwarf are chasing, who has stolen something important from them, the Chalice after which this town is named, during their exploration of the ancient tunnels beneath the town.
