SCENE 13 - the Forest of Thieves

The Goblin Scout Runkle and his friend Flim a surviving bandit of the Blue Rag Gang are approaching the Forest of Thieves in an Ox-cart laden with bounty stolen from the sacked village of Ridge. The Ox-cart is a typical wild-west saloon Wagon with metal rings and a canvas awning on the top, it has four wheels. A similar two-wheeled cart is called a Trap. Flim is singing and giggling and telling Runkle all about her life so far. She is very happy because of her new wealth and she is making it plainly obvious to Runkle that he is now the man in her life. She thinks he is a hero for saving her of the supernatural horrors that occurred in Ridge.

The Forest of Thieves is located to the South of Port Blacksand which is North-West of Ridge.

The landscape is meadows and occasional small woods. The road is a dirt-track, here and there are patches of broken stone causeway, remnants of an ancient road that is largely buried beneath the current one. Occasionally small trees grow up out of the road with brambles and nettles happily growing cross it; obviously it has fallen into disuse. Now and then another road stems from it or there is a crossroads. The Ox is untroubled by such and plods on lost in its own thoughts, seeming to know the way.

Maps of Allansia are vague and no two are the same, so for the sake of simplicity; the Forest of theives is 1 days ride from Ridge which means that the Ox-cart should arrive in the Forest of Thieves by nightfall tomorrow or perhaps by mid-morning on the following day depending on what encounters might happen along the way.

It is currently dusk. Due to the impact of suspense I will not give a full description of the Forest of Thieves at this time, I will however edit this text when the story has caught up with itself and also open up the relevant pages in the campaign wiki; http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/aff/wikis/main-page

“Have any idea where this inn is? We should stop somewhere for the night soon.”

“It’s on this road. We shouldn’t have much trouble from bandits because most of them are… gone now. But there might be monsters! You’ll protect me won’t you Runkle?”

There is a loud ‘crack!’ sound and the cart tips on its front right corner. The Ox tugs at it and then grinds to a halt. Examining the wheel you see that it has got stuck in a pot-hole and the front axle has snapped! At exactly the same moment the skies open with a torrential downpour!
“Well this must be our campsite.” says Flim optimistically.

The wagon is laden with sacks, chests and drawers pulled from furniture full of coins, ornaments, cutlery, antiques, of metal glass and ceramics, from all over Allansia that have been collected by denizens of Ridge over the past …several hundred years. It is quite some hoard. Flim’s eyes sparkle with delight as you remove the blankets covering the coins & treasures.
“We should bury some of it.” She advises. “Can you use a shovel?” There just happens to be a goblin-sized shovel in the wagon too.See more

In an excited voice Flim replies; “why wait?!” and throws herself on top of you.
Some time later you notice that it is still raining outside.

Flim fumbles about in her belt-pouch and retrieves a smoking pouch and pipe, and a fl…int that she uses to light it up with. You smell hair and herbs and pungent tones in the odour that soon fills the wagon with a heavy blue smoke.

The wagon has stalled in a small, dense patch of woodland such as are scattered about in the otherwise open meadows. Almost hidden in the undergrowth at the edge of the road next to the pot-hole is a boulder, shoulder-high to a goblin, carved into the shape of a cheeky face poking its tongue out, its eyes are large and rolling in different directions. Moss grows all over it. Flim cackles with laughter when you point it out to her.
“At least we’ll know this spot if we ever return here!” she says. “Perhaps it marks a path? You should go and look by daylight. Come back up here and cuddle under the blanket.”See more

The night passes relatively uneventfully.
Flim wakes you at Dawn by prodding your ribs.
“Hey, my brave and adventurous goblin, find some breakfast and fix the wagon, will ya?”
