SCENE 15 - a Tower Forlorn

Beside the cheeky-faced carved stone way-marker is an overgrown dirt track mostly hidden by undergrowth. It is obvious that nobody has traveled it for a very long time. To either side the small patch of woodland breathes gently in a breeze, its rustling leaves drip from last nights rain which has calmed to a light drizzle. The vegetation protects you from this. Up ahead can be heard the sound of a large flock of crows crawing in chorus, causing you to feel uneasy. You remind yourself that they are only crow and press on steadily.

The path breaks between two tree and bramble covered tumps into an open clearing, at one side of which is a ruined tower! It stands several stories tall, the top has crumbled away which judging from the number of rocks scattered around is what the tumps consist of. The flock of crows are nesting thick ivy which mostly covers the building, and tree’s growing from its first and second levels.

Curiously you make your way around the tower until you find a rotting wooden door hanging from sturdy hinges. Something has burrowed beneath the door and its lower half is missing although a stone slab step makes it a tight squeeze to climb inside. You admire a large bronze ring knocker and matching door-handle.
